How Does A Belt Sander Work

Belt sanders run on an electrical motor, which rotates drums that are on which the belt of sandpaper is placed. They are either portable, which means they can be moved across the material, or they can be stationary, where the material must be transferred toward the sanding belt.

What is Belt Sanders?

Belt sanders are multi-purpose tools. They are typically employed for trimming to a line (photo) as well as sanding rough surfaces or leveling them (like the replacement boards in the floor of a hardwood) as well as freehand shaping and rounding. Because they’re full of power and can withstand rough grits, they can excel in the elimination of wood.

In addition, unlike orbital or vibrating sanders, their process of sanding is linear. This means regardless of the grit, they can sand in the direction of the grain and achieve an attractive result. Although a belt sander isn’t an essential part of the arsenal of homeowners there aren’t many professional carpenters or skilled without one.

Utilizing the Belt Sander

When you’ve used the belt sander for the first time in your life, expect to be amazed by its force (and the sound!). As with all sanders, it is important to keep the belt sander in motion to avoid deep grooves in the sanding surface. It is not necessary to put pressure on the belt because the belt is more absorbent than sandpaper oscillating.

The belt sander will always pull back from users, which is why it is essential to secure the machine. To ensure that the belt sander with the pressure plate sits in the straightest position possible over the piece of work, utilize the handle in front. So you can maintain control of the machine.

Tips for Using Your Sanding Belt
  • Keep your sanding belt clean. If material is loaded onto the belt, the belt’s efficiency is drastically reduced. A grease stick may be applied to the belt before using it with metal or a rubber belt cleaner stick may be used to get rid of any material that is loaded.
  • Wearing safety glasses and a face shield is a good idea along with respirators for work environments that are dusty.
  • Inspect your sander. Make sure the drive drum/wheel/roller is free of bumps or divots, otherwise there could be uneven sanding on the belt.
  • If you are using a hand sander with power, make sure that your work area is properly clamped and is unable to move. If your surface is not properly clamped, you’ll get a nonlinear pattern, and you’ll have to start over.
  • Don’t sand side to one side, but always move from front to back. This will prevent the belt from sliding and eliminates almost entirely the chance of damaging the belt as well as the machine that sands it.
